Does every little girl dream of a Canopy Bed? I know I did...
Somewhere along the way I grew out of "pink and frilly" and switched over to "neutral and junky"...but either way I am totally "in love" with my new ladder bed "canopy"!!
My engineer hubby very securely attached these painted metal braces to the wall above the bed...I repeat, VERY securely.
(And we "sternly" warned the kiddos about practicing their "monkey bar" moves while we're not looking...but if they decide to be "sneaky little monkeys", my husband assures me they won't be able to get that thing down...but sshhhh, don't tell them that ;)
And then he attached this old rustic ladder to the braces....and I draped these painters drop cloths over the ladder rungs...just like that, a "Big girl" junky canopy...sigh...did I say I love it??? I do!!
And of course you need something special on the wall...inspired by a very special song...
(Click the link above to hear the song over on You Tube :))
My mom used to listen to Randy Travis over and over in the car when I was a little girl...and I can still hear her singing along to that sweet song. I used to listen carefully and know that I was going to hold out for "that" kind of love...nothing less would do...
I'm happy to report...I found it...and the fact that he was sweet enough to hang an old ladder above our bed without questioning it...just proves it :)
Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!!

ReplyDeleteLoved this post Laurel, now I'm going to have that song stuck in my mind. I love what you and hubby did with the ladder and braces....very clever!!
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic! I have a little window over my bed and I can't have drapes, but I want more for it and something like this might solve the problem. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI saw the photo from this story circulating on facebook last night : )
ReplyDeleteI love the bedding. Will you share where you got the bedding? (Can't tell if it's duvet or quilt, etc.) Thanks
ReplyDeleteLaurel,
ReplyDeleteI think that is the most cleverest idea yet! I am sure it will be copied a million times! I love your wedding photo. Still two precious people.
Smiles, alice
WOW...I am in awe of your sweet comments and wonderful feedback! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous...that bedding was actually from Target a few years ago now??? I found a couple of extra shams at the thrift store recently...or I've seen some disconinued styles on ebay...if that helps?? Thanks so much...I love it too :)
Please tell me how you made the artwork above the bed with the song. I want to recreate that so bad!!!
DeleteThanks
Crystal
Of course...we just screwed the empty window frame right to the wall...then I used stamps and stencils to put the letters onto indiviual book pages with gray acrylic paint...and hung them right on the wall with wooden push pins I bought at Walmart...quick and easy!! Thanks for asking Crystal!!
DeleteWhere can I find the ladder you used
DeleteThe ladder is actually one that had been in my husband's family for years. We cut it down to 7 feet...sorry, I know that doesn't help much. Maybe you could try a local flea market or junk sale?? Good luck!
DeleteSeriously Laurel?!?!?! How the heck do you keep coming up with these AWESOME ideas!!!!!! Love it! You are amazing! :)

ReplyDeleteOh my...I am completely overwhelmed at your amazing response to my headboard idea!!! Do you know that this post has had almost 6,000 views?? My goodness...I'm speechless!! I know that I owe a huge thank you to Funky Junk Donna for sharing this on her FB page...as well as the rest of you for sharing and pinning up a storm...THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! There have been a few questions on some the other details of the room...I mentioned that I bought the bedding at Target a few years ago...but here are a few more specific details if you are interested...
ReplyDeleteComforter and Shams...Target Casual Home
Bird Pillow...Dwell Studio for Target
Mr and Mrs Pillows...handmade by my friend and booth buddy Joan aka Signs of the Times...you can find her on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Signs-of-the-Times/246711895367729...and I hear there might be an etsy store opening soon??? I'll keep you posted!!
And the wall color is Colonial Cobblestone by Dutch Boy.
Does that cover it? Hope so...but I plan to do another post on the rest of the room soon...I have a few more "junky" details I want to show you :) Chat soon!!
I don't even know what to write...I'm speechless. This is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. It is sooooo beautiful and perfectly junky/fabulous. Truly wonderful. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteJust adorable, congrats on all the hits.
ReplyDeleteI have never been a frilly-fru-fru girl but I'm seriously in love with this version of a canopy!
ReplyDeleteThat is just wonderful! I love that ladder up there. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteHi, I just found your blog, and that is just too cool!! Love that idea! And, here I was just asking my husband the other day if he could save out the next old ladder that comes his way, that they may be throwing out at work. And, no, he's not a carpenter, he's a technician, lol!
ReplyDeleteWho says a ladder has to be just a ladder?!
By the way, I'm your newest follower, yay! Would be so appreciative if you would reciprocate and follow back! Thanks so much, and hope you're having a great day!
You genius! I love the ladder! The artwork looks great, too. :)
ReplyDeleteLaurel love this idea! Thanx for sharing it with us all.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome Laurel - great idea!
ReplyDeleteVery unusual canopy. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteOh how we love that perfect imperfection!!
ReplyDeleteCreativeness abounds!
Miss seeing you!!
Laurel,
ReplyDeleteYour new bed looks great...I see why Donna featured it on Facebook...congrats on all the hits and now,,,keep the kids down from there:)
Blessings,

What a GREAT idea! I recreated this in my living room - take a look if you'd like: http://thesustainablecouple.blogspot.com/2012/07/30-ladder-living-room-wall-art.html
ReplyDeleteToo FUN...looks great at your house too :) Thanks!!! Laurel
DeleteI love this idea but why didn't you drape the curtains over the hardware so it doesn't show? It would still have that rustic look but be so much neater.
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks...I actually left the hardware exposed on purpose. I really like the fun and unexpected "junky" look of those cream painted braces...just my style :)
Deleteneat idea! I have a bigger ladder than that. I would have to cut it down to fit. But my husband probably wouldn't like it, because he couldn't reach his night stand or see the clock.
ReplyDeleteLaurel I love love this look and especially the 4ever sign. :)
ReplyDeleteWhere can we find a ladder like this? It looks really old.
Thanks!
It is really old...passed down from my husband's grandfather, I believe. We had it in the garage for years...maybe try a local flea market or junk sale? Good luck!
DeleteI Love, Love, Love the decor! Where is the bedding from? I have been searching and haven't found anything like it. Please tell! :) Thanks so much! jrz68@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteInspired by this post ( Pinterest pin) I dug the old ladder from out back that "I was saving for something" and we did this!! I used painters drop clothes too and I LOVE it. I painted two little lanterns to put on it and will be adding twinkle lights too. Just need the perfect "artwork" for behind the bed. Thanks for the inspiration.. I LOVE my junky princess canopy too!!
ReplyDeleteI love this, it's so cool and the sign touched my heart. I used to sing that song all the time also :-) Could you post a picture of your nightstand? I thought I saw shutters beside them.

ReplyDeleteYes, those are shutters behind the stool night stands. I did another post with pictures of the shutters and the rest of the room...

Thanks so much!! Laurel
I love this idea and I especially love your bed spread. It would match my bedroom perfectly. Where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteThank you!! The bedding was from Target's Casual Home line a couple of years ago...from the response it's getting on my post I'm thinking they should make it again!! Maybe you want to send them a link and put in your request :)
DeleteTarget has Threshold™ Printed Medallion Comforter Set. It has the same colors as Laurel's bedding.
ReplyDeleteGreat to know!! Thanks :)
DeleteI love the picture of you on your wedding day with your husband. You both have great smiles on your faces.
ReplyDeleteI know you posted or commented somewhere about the length/width of the drop clothes you used but I cannot find it now. Can you please tell me what size you used and where you purchased them?
ReplyDeleteHi there...sorry it took me so long to respond!! The drop cloths I used were purchased in the painting section at Menards. They are 4ft wide by 14ft long. Hope that helps :)
